NEK starts concrete development of wind energy projects in The Gambia

After the Government of The Gambia and NEK signed a Memorandum of Understanding last year on the development of onshore and offshore wind projects, the Swiss wind project developer has now started the concrete planning of these projects.

At a total of four locations along the Atlantic coast of The Gambia, wind conditions are being analysed in detail using lidar equipment up to heights of around 250 m above ground, following several years of measurements on measuring masts. The latter have shown the fundamental potential at these locations for the realisation of wind projects.

Parallel to the wind measurements, the project development steps required for the professional planning of wind farms are now also being taken, ranging from land securing, environmental impact assessments, social impact assessments, community engagements and grid connection studies to the negotiation of a power purchase agreement.

The 4 onshore wind farms are being planned in such a way that construction can begin in 2027. At the same time, NEK is also pressing ahead with the development of a large offshore wind farm, which is planned in the waters around 10 kilometres off the coast near the town of Gunjur.
